A Closer Look at Ryn Shoes
Many footwear brands have entered into the toning shoe market in the past couple of years, each with their own angle to get customers toning with them rather than the competition. Brands such as the FitFlop have the style, Skechers have the bounce, and Reebok have running shoes pretty much to themselves. Each get their fair share of the sales, but there is one brand which is right at the top when it comes to performance, stability and quality of construction. What’s more, it offers the full complement of fringe benefits including posture correction, improvements to blood circulation, easing of the strain on the joints, and has the ability to take you wherever you want to go, including if you like to get your kicks from off road walking.
The brand is Ryn, and Ryn shoes are the crème de la crème of toning shoes. Of course, it’s not really fair to lump Ryn toning shoes with all the other toning shoe brands, as they offer a range of benefits and a design which is far superior to what is currently on the market, with the possible exception of MBT.
Ryn shoes guide the foot through a natural heel to toe roll, and can help to correct excessive pronation of the feet, which eases the strain on the muscles and bones in the feet and ankles. In contrast to the brands which pile in the EVA foam rubber for an extraordinary bounce, the construction of Ryn shoes uses harder materials to give a more rigid sole. The foot is them made to role with the curved outsole, rather than be absorbed into the midsole of the shoes. Whilst the brand is new to many people, it is actually one of the oldest of all the toning shoe brands, being first formulated in the early 1990’s, around the same time as MBT Anti Shoes.
Ryn Shoes vs MBT Anti Shoes
Despite the idea for each brand of shoes coming around the same time, MBT shoes were the first on the market by some measure. The MBT Anti Shoe was released in the mid 1990’s and has had a decent head start. Ryn shoes didn’t actually get launched until 2002, some 10 years or so after the initial idea. The delay was the result of extensive testing and perfecting of the design, and rather than release a substandard product onto the market, the makers decided to wait. Even then, the shoes only got released in their homeland of South Korea, and the good old US of A had to wait until 2008 to get their hands on a pair. Purchasers of the shoes however will agree that the wait was worth it, with the quality of construction and the benefits of Ryn shoes second to none.
Whilst the technology used in Ryn shoes and MBT shoes are similar, and the range of benefits virtually identical, Ryn shoes win better marks for style, with the shoes having been likened to a “cooler version of MBT’s”. Both brands perform well across the board, as you would expect for footwear which can cost upwards of $200 a pair. Both will reward you with a far longer lifespan than the cheaper $50 toning shoes, and really are in a totally different class.
Ryn has a more robust design than MBT shoes, and score yet more marks for wet weather walking. They have excellent grip, and will even cope well with off road walking. The design of Ryn shoes is highly stable, offering superior lateral stability, and the harder compounds used for the construction of the shoes is preferred by many customers who have tried out both brands.
Anyone who considers the weight of the shoes as part of the purchase process, is more likely to lean towards Ryn shoes. The brand is lighter than MBT Anti Shoes by some degree. Whilst you want toning shoes to work your muscles harder, you want the work to be done by the right muscles, and lighter shoes will certainly help and should keep you walking for longer before the muscles get fatigued.
However, Ryn are not for everyone and for those who like to have a “spongier” sole will almost certainly do better with MBT’s. On balance, I think that for the whole package, Ryn shoes have the edge, but it really is a matter of personal preference.
Ryn Shoes Design
Ryn shoes use a 7-part sole unit to give greater control of stability, and as such have a much harder wearing design than many toning shoes on the market. Most toning shoes use a super soft spongy EVA foam rubber midsole to add some bounce, cushioning and support, whereas Ryn shoes only use the bare minimum, yet still offer excellent cushioning and shock absorption.
The benefit of combining EVA rubber sparingly with polyurethane (PU) is the increased robustness which is offered, and as such the shoes have a much more rigid sole unit which allows the rocker bottom to have maximum effect.
What’s more, EVA foam rubber breaks down relatively quickly, so whilst many toning shoes will have uppers that will last for years, with regular use the EVA breaks down over approximately 6-9 months, leaving their stability rather unpredictable, reducing the effectiveness for toning and potentially leaving the body with a greater chance of injury. With Ryn shoes, the lifespan is long, stability remains excellent, and the feet are properly protected.
Ryn Shoes Styles
Fitting toning technology into footwear whilst still producing an attractive shoe is a challenge which few manufacturers have managed to get right; however with Ryn shoes the style is actually first rate. The brand produces an attractive selection of shoes, arguably better than that of MBT. Ryn shoes include the only toning dress shoes, as well as smart and sporty styles, with a good choice of sandals for the summer.
All told, there is a lot going for Ryn shoes, and if you want improved wellness, great style, and a design which is both safe and long lasting then you won’t find a better toning shoe to put on your feet.
The downside? Well, the only potential down point is the price. Ryn shoes are not cheap, but when you consider the benefits and the lifespan of the shoes, they really are a bargain in the long run.
